The Robinson family was going into space to fight for a chance for humanity. Now they are fighting to live long enough to find a way home.
In the near future, earth's fossil resources are about to be used up. In an attempt to save the human race, scientists have begun building a gate, through which faster than light travel will be possible - but only if there is a gate at the destination to receive the travelers. The Robinson Family has been chosen to travel to Alpha Prime - the only other inhabitable planet known - at normal speed, ten years, cryogenically frozen. But Dr. Smith, a sinister man, sabotages their spaceship, Jupiter 2, but is also betrayed by his people. So, he has to work together with the Robinsons in order to survive himself. When Jupiter 2 is falling into the sun, the only chance to survive is to activate the hyperdrive - without a gate at the other end. Soon, the Robinsons are someplace really unknown, where they meet unfriendly silicon-based space spiders, take in a little ape-like creature and name new star systems after Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig. They have to reach Alpha Prime in order to build the second gate, or earth's only hope is gone.
Well, with all that money involved and the talents of Gary Oldman, you would have thought that there would have been something worth watching about this film. Unfortunately not. There seems to be a missing plot which is extremely important when delving with the concepts of time travel and the likes. But, Hopkins does well with the poor handling that he has to deal with, the visuals are stunning with smooth directing and a nice rhythmic editing pattern which keeps the film alive. The special effects rule the show (when they are used) and Gary Oldman and William Hurt are the only two actors that actually "act" in the film to keep it going. If you want to watch a film which amazing special effects up to the standards of "Starship Troopers" and a plot which compares with "Showgirls" then this is a mindless special effects blockbuster for the younger generation.
It was action packed and visually great. But……. I have a problem with one part.<br/><br/>Near the end… where the father stays behind with the older version of William, they watch the ship take off and explode. It was carrying the rest of the Robinson family (including young Will Robinson). So if young Will died then the older Will should cease to exist along with the ship and junk around them….. leaving the father there alone.<br/><br/>But I can look past that error and say that it was an enjoyable escape from reality.
Though there's an obvious, admirable effort to supply character development and plot twists, the set-work and special effects - both stylish and stunning - tend to dominate.
SImple answer - it&#39;s not Matt Le Blanc under the helmet. Because the actor was also busy filming the TV series &quot;Friends&quot; at the same time as making this movie, a double was used for this sequence to allow for some flexibility in the actor&#39;s schedule.<br/><br/>Also, because he&#39;s a military officer, his helmet is more advanced and protective than the ones used by the Robinsons.
